ABOUT FRED RADONIC
Fred Radonic’s introduction to
metal detecting and prospecting
started as a young boy in Cicero,
Illinois. He says that being in the
Scouts enabled him to do things
that others would not have the
opportunity to do. A Boy Scout
leader invited a group of Scouts to
join him on a hunt on a local
middle school ball field. Fred was
so amazed in how much stuff they
dug out of the ground that his
passion for detecting grew and he
purchased his very first detector
from a magazine. Armed with his
Detectron 7-t metal detector, Fred
hit the streets and searched local
churches and fields. He found his
first silver coins and a rare
George Washington token!
Relocating to the golden state,
Southern California, opened
Fred’s eyes to gold! Realizing that
his Detectron was not suitable for
nugget hunting, he purchased a
name brand gold detector and
headed to the gold bearing hills of
the San Gabriel Mountains and
the Mohave Desert. Over the
years Fred learned the art of
nugget hunting and has recovered
hundreds of pieces of gold from
tailing piles, dry washes and
gulches. In 1993 Fred got married
and in 2001 moved to Mariposa,
California near Yosemite National
Park. He continued his contracting
business and opened a shop
specializing in nuts and dried fruit
grown in California. In 2009 Fred
and his wife sold their dried fruit
and nut business to open Gold
Rush Trading Post, a prospecting
and metal detecting shop in
downtown Mariposa. The shop
serves the small, once thriving,
mining towns that surround
Yosemite. Running Gold Rush
Trading Post is fun for Fred and
he says that the most rewarding
thing about it is helping out the
beginners in this great hobby of
gold prospecting or metal
detecting. He says, “I love to
guide and motivate those that are
just getting into it. It’s exciting and
it brings me back to my first
introduction to detecting. It’s a
fever that grows with time and a
wonderful hobby for all ages.”
Besides serving his customers,
Fred finds time to go metal
detecting several times a week for
gold, relics and coins. He also
loves to sluice for placer gold in
the local creeks and rivers. Fred
gives friendly words of caution
when he says, “Once you catch
this treasure hunting fever, it stays
with you for life.”
Fred Radonic enjoys searching for buried treasure.
